Stone & Aggregate Recycling

Innovative ideas for recycling resources.

Kimmins took the thought of recycling crushed aggregate and made it reality. We are committed to recycling and saving our natural resources along with encouraging others to do the same. Our goal is to introduce innovative ideas that are cost effective. In the area of aggregate recycling we currently have the following products: FDOT Certified road base, Non-FDOT certified road base, Rip Rap made to requested specifications, recycled fill dirt, recycled top soil, #89 limestone, #57 limestone, 2”-4” limestone, #57 crushed concrete, and concrete fines.

Concrete Recycling

Kimmins can be contracted to come out to your site to remove various types of concrete materials including roads, interstate pavement, airport runway, pavement, building demolition material, and plant rebuilds or shutdowns. Kimmins recycles over 150,000 tons of concrete material annually, which in turn is made into many products, primarily a DOT certified road base, and rip rap. The road base can be used for top base and stabilizing sub base for roadways and foundations. In order for road base to perform as intended, it must meet certain physical requirements such as proper gradation and the durability to resist the effects of weathering. Kimmins processes this material into high quality aggregate base materials, conserving our natural resources while reducing waste sent to landfills.

FDOT Concrete Road Base

Kimmins is the first company in the State of Florida to have CERTIFIED FDOT Road base. Under FDOT the material code is B12.

Concrete Rip Rap

This product can be seen along shoreline, around ditch pipe and in landscaping. Kimmins sizes Rip Rap to the customer’s needs. On average, material is usually 10” to 18”.

Crushed Asphalt

This material starts out as slabs of asphalt. When roadways or parking lots are demolished using machinery, then a chunked product is created. The material is then crushed down to a 1 ½” minus product. It is very important to note that when asphalt is crushed it is broken down into its natural format. As we look at the end product you will see sand, rock, asphalt, and dirt. When material is compacted in place it will not harden in comparison to millings.

Asphalt Millings

The term “millings” comes from the machine in which it is produced. A milling machine is used to pull up pavement in long runs compared to small segments achieved with a loader. The milling machine will take the material from the pavement directly into a dump truck for removal from the site. A milled product is larger than a crushed product with the average size being 3 ½” to 4”.

Sand

Kimmins sells three different sand products. Our White Beach Sand can be used in playgrounds, volleyball courts, sand bags, and some well point systems. The DOT Under Drain Sand is used for well point systems, or filtration system, and meets the spec 902-4. The DOT Masonry Sand is mostly used with the placement of brick in driveways and parking lots.

Granite Aggregate

Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive and igneous rock. Granite is typically medium to coarse in texture and can be pink to dark gray or even black, depending on its chemistry and mineralogy that produces the classic “salt-and-pepper” color. Granite is not mined in Florida, and therefore must be imported into the state through rail, ship or truck. The #57 and #67 stone is one of the hardest rocks on earth and will not breakdown over time. Therefore it is the ideal material for pipe bedding and landscaping.

Our #57 and #67 granite are vary slightly in size, with the #57 granite being 1 ½” in size down to 3/16”, the #67 granite is 1” down to 3/16”, and the ballast granite is 3” to 6”.

Granite recycling – Kimmins accepts a wide variety of granite for recycling including countertops, tile, and cutoffs. This material is crushed and recycled. We also offer Roll Off service for companies who manufacture granite countertops and tile.
