Tampa Mayor Proclaims Oct. 25 ‘Kimmins Contracting Day’ to Mark Company’s 100th Anniversary

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 25, 2023 – The mayor of Tampa, Jane Castor, has officially designated October 25, 2023, as “Kimmins Contracting Day” in recognition of the civil construction firm’s 100th year in business since its founding, in 1923. The official proclamation marks a high point in Kimmins’ yearlong commemoration of its many decades of playing an integral part in keeping Tampa Bay’s infrastructure and utility services operating, expanding, and improving.

Mayor Castor presented the proclamation in a ceremony at the Tampa Municipal Office Building on Oct. 24. The proclamation was received by the president of Kimmins, Joe Williams, who has led Kimmins for over 25 years and been with the firm for more than 40 years.

Mayor Jane Castor presents a city of Tampa proclamation designating Oct. 25, 2023, as Kimmins Contracting Corp. Day to Kimmins President Joe Williams.

“The City of Tampa is proud to recognize those businesses and individuals who have made a mark in our city by their economic investment and involvement in the community, and Kimmins Contracting Corp., celebrating its 100th Anniversary, is one such company,” the mayor’s proclamation begins. “In recognition of its 100th Anniversary, and 40th Anniversary in Tampa, Kimmins Contracting Corporation is to be commended for being an expert in utility services, for its proven community leadership, its success as a family business, for being a good neighbor, and for its philosophies that focus on people, business sense, respect for others, and excellence,” the proclamation continued.

“We’re humbled to receive this honor from Mayor Castor and proud to have been able to partner and grow with the city of Tampa and Hillsborough County over the last 40 years,” said Williams. “Having a Kimmins Contracting Day is truly a capstone in our centennial celebration as a company this year. We thank all our customers, employees, and business partners, and, especially, all the people of the Tampa Bay area, who have contributed so much to our success for so many years, and we hope to continue this success for another 100 years.”

Kimmins’ most notable projects around the Tampa Bay area over the last few decades have included the construction of new roads for Water Street; the replacement of the water main for Harbour Island; the demolition of a parking garage at Tampa International Airport; the improvement of stormwater drainage pipes in South Tampa; and the renovation of the Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in South Tampa.

“We work hand in hand with the city of Tampa and Hillsborough County’s utility service providers to make repairs and build new infrastructure to keep the Tampa Bay area thriving and growing,” said Williams.

Over its past 100 years, Kimmins has done this by serving in several key roles:

  1. Utility services expert - Kimmins has distinguished itself as an expert in knowing and managing all the minute details of the power, water, and building infrastructure that help keeps Tampa running day in and day out.

  2. Emergency responder - Kimmins has demonstrated itself as a leader that has committed its team and resources to being available 24/7 to respond to Tampa Bay’s most serious utility emergencies.

  3. Family business - Kimmins has built itself and continued to operate as a family-run business that has cultivated a culture of caring, with an average employee tenure of nine years.

  4. Good neighbor - Kimmins has established itself as a good neighbor to the Tampa Bay community through partnership programs that boost local minority companies, apprenticeship programs that cultivate future civil construction leaders, and philanthropic programs that give back to local neighborhoods.

“We strive to be the catalyst that keeps the Tampa Bay area running 24/7 and to be on hand to respond to almost any kind of utility service maintenance, installation, repair, or emergency,” Williams said. “We know all the nooks and crannies of Tampa's utility infrastructure, because we’ve been building and maintaining it for generations, and we hope to be here for generations to come.”
